What is HTTP ?
HTTP stands for hyper text transfer protocol
it is protocol to send request and get the response from server using a browser.

What is protocol?
set of rules to follow to get response for the request through browser.

What is FTP?
File transfer protocol.
to transfer the files between multiple computers

REST stands for Representational State Transfer. (It is sometimes spelled "ReST".) and in virtually all cases, the HTTP protocol is used.
REST is an architecture style for designing networked applications. The idea is that, rather than using complex mechanisms such as CORBA, RPC or SOAP to connect between machines, simple HTTP is used to make calls between machines.

In many ways, the World Wide Web itself, based on HTTP, can be viewed as a REST-based architecture.

Compare with others like corba, mq, webservices, etc.. Restful services are now more popular and efficient over HTTP protocol.
