Smoke testing is an initial testing done before accepting the build for detail testing. It is a subset of all defined/planned test cases that cover the main functionality of a component or system, to ascertain that the most crucial functions of a program work, but not bothering with finer details. A daily build and smoke test is among industry best practices.

Sanity testing is an initial test done before the Regression testing of new version/build of application. It is testing to determine if a new software version is performing well enough to accept it for a major testing effort. If application is crashing for initial use then system is not stable enough for further testing and build or application is assigned to fix.

Adhoc testing is carried out informally; no formal test preparation takes place, no recognized test design technique is used, there are no expectations for results during the test execution activity.
